Crafting the Perfect Leave-Behind: Materials That Turn One Job into Many
Every job you complete is more than just a paycheck—it’s a marketing opportunity. The moment your technician wraps up the work and thanks the customer is the perfect time to plant the seed for future business and referrals. That’s where a well-designed leave-behind comes in.
A leave-behind is any physical item you give to a customer at the end of a service call—something that reminds them of the great work you did, makes it easy for them to contact you again, and even encourages them to spread the word. Done right, it can be one of the most cost-effective tools in your marketing toolbox.
The key is to keep it simple, useful, and brand-consistent. This could be a magnet with your contact info, a door hanger with a seasonal offer, a maintenance checklist, or even a thank-you card with a referral bonus printed inside. The goal is to be helpful and memorable.
For example, if your tech just completed an HVAC tune-up, include a branded checklist showing what was done and when the next service is due. That instantly positions you as proactive and professional—and gives the homeowner a reason to call you again without having to dig through old emails or invoices.
Want to spark referrals? Include a small “friends and family” card that offers a discount or incentive when someone books using the customer’s name. Better yet, turn it into a fridge magnet so it doesn’t get tossed in the junk drawer.
And don’t underestimate the power of a handwritten note. A short message thanking the customer for their business, signed by the technician or owner, creates a lasting impression. It says, “We see you. We appreciate you.” In today’s digital world, those personal touches stand out.
Make sure your team is trained to leave these materials with intention. It’s not just a hand-off—it’s a close to the service experience. Encourage them to say, “Here’s a quick reference for your next service and a little thank-you for choosing us.”
When your last impression is as strong as your first, customers remember you—and recommend you.
